August 19th, 2009

Hi I’m looking at buying one of the above units – could you let me know your experiences or opinions on these devices please? I’m struggling to make a decision with all the units about! It need to have Western Europe hence the models I have chosen. Thanks for any replies :o )

go with tomtom, either 710 or xl europe. For ease of use tomtom is the best. Even the garmin rep couln’t put a strong case for why to buy garmin against tomtom.

Garmin GPS built-in FM transmitter … Is it necessary?

August 18th, 2009

I am considering buying a Garmin GPS device. In its Nuvi series, 350/360 have fairly similar features as 650/660 except that the latter have larger LCD screens and 660 has a built-in FM transmitter. (Of course, there is the difference of bluetooth capability. But I am not really into it.)

My question is: Do I really need to pay a few hundred extra dollars just to have the built-in FM transmitter?

An alternative I can think of is to buy a separate FM transmitter (there are tons out there for MP3 players etc. and cost under $50) and output the voice prompts from Nuvi 350/360’s earphone jack to the external FM transmitter.

Will this work? Has anyone tried this with success? Thanks!

Yes, your correct, it will work, but do you need to pay extra for it? That is the question, I say no. The Nuvi 350 was picked number #1 GPS unit by Consumer Digest and various pulibcations and it annouces streets. The main thing and person forget is that GPS unit is to get you from point A to B. Period> Go with the Nuvi 350. Its silly to drive with the stereo on, switch to an empty radio channel (good luck in big citites) and than switch back. The Nuvi screen is literally icnhes from you. Unless you do heavy driving or drive a truck I cannot see the average person need that capability. Good luck with you@!

Which Garmin GPS should I get?

August 17th, 2009

I want to buy either a Garmin GPS system but don’t know which model to get. Here is what I want out of it:
-Talking ACCURATE directions
-3D display
-Help me to get back on track if I miss a turn
-Touchscreen
-Large, high definition screen
I don’t need a bluetooth hookup or MP3. I would also like it be a newer model. I am willing to spend up to $300. Costco has the Nuvi 650 on their website for $299.99 but it has a lot of extras that I don’t need. Can anyone recommend a GPS that would be a good fit for me? Thanks!

I bought the Garmin 650 from Costco. I’ve only had it for a couple of days, but I’m loving everything about it. I, like you, have been holding off buying a GPS system, because I didn’t want to pay too much for a system that I wouldn’t like or would be outdated in a couple of months. After seeing this great deal at Costco, a coworker and I decided to purchase two. We ordered the systems on Tuesday, and we received them that Friday.

The 650 has all those capabilities you want. It has talking directions with street names. So, instead of hearing "In 500 feet, turn right" you’ll hear, "In 500 feet, turn right onto Main Street." (or some variation of that).

The 3D display is wonderful. You can even choose an image that matches your car. They have several other car images that you can download. They are pretty funny. I’m a fan of the snowboarder and the wagon.

Any wrong turn will notify the GPS system to recalculate, and it will get you back on track. You can make stops on the way to your final destination. You can save places just by touching the car on the screen.

The voices they use are nice and loud, but be careful, because I heard that some voices will not provide the street names. I’m using Jill, and I’m fine with her.

It is a touch screen that will calibrate with your touch, so that it recognizes how you feel the screen.

I think the 4.3" screen is very clear. I haven’t tried it at night yet, but I’m sure it will work just fine.

There is no bluetooth capability, but it does come with MP3 – which could be fun, but I don’t really need it either. I might download the three free books that you get with the audible.com brochure they stick in the box and then cancel… make sure you cancel, otherwise you’ll get charged monthly $22 – $23.

The 650 has the suction cup mount. I did hear reports that some thieves have been targeting cars that have suction cup marks, because they know there is a GPS system in the car, so beware, and keep the glass clean of marks. There is an anti-theft lock that can be enabled… while it may not keep it out of a thief’s hands, it will at least give them a harder time. Unless you have an armored car, I would keep the GPS out of site or take it with you.

It might have a couple of extras that you don’t need, but for $300, go for it. It’s regularly priced at $589. You might even want the features after a while. From what I hear, these systems are easily upgraded, so you can hold onto it for a long time.

Good luck on your search.

Garmin GPS ’s are a good choice, especially this one, including its size and its features make a good gps to have. Its fast and it has a long battery life, i would consider getting this one if you are looking for a product that you get your moneys worth for.

Did we make a good choice?? Please answers?

August 15th, 2009

ok we ordered the garmin nuvi 650 gps system from costco and they had it for $299 i think it was originally like $450 or something. at best buy it was $599. y is there such a price difference. could there be something wrong with the one at costco like y is it so cheap?

Are you sure it is exactly the same model with the same memory and functions? If so, it seems like you got a good bargain. Garmin is a good GPS product.

Clean a Garmin Nuvi Screen?

August 14th, 2009

Can anybody suggest how best to clean the screen on my Garmin 650 GPS…Being a touch-screen device it can become
dirty.

A damp micro fiber cloth or an eye glass cleaning cloth would be good for cleaning the touch screen. DO NOT spray any liquids directly on the screen spray the cloth and wipe the screen with the damp cloth.

Which GPS device should I buy?

August 13th, 2009

I’m trying to decide between a Garmin Nuvi 650 and a TomTom One XL-S.

Both have the text-to-speech feature. Have read mixed reviews about both. I also believe the Nuvi 650 can take only 1 via point at a time compared with several for TomTom. Any takes?

Thanks!

I like the regular TomTom One V3. The XL version has the same features with the advantage on a larger screen. You will be happy with the TomTom unit.
