Geek Brief TV #270

August 10th, 2009

I got a press release from Amazon.com this morning that says they’re dramatically lowering prices on some of their most wished for gifts, including the 16GB iPod Touch. How do you show invisible speakers [1] on a video podcast? The Tux Droid [2] is a wireless communications penguin for Linux lovers. Our cellphones are demanding their own beanbag chairs [3], and Chris Pirillo [4] points us to someone’s
Christmas light display [5] that we can control over the Web. Dec 05, 2007 22:07

Amazon Customers Set Gift Expectations High This Holiday Season

Leading Online Retailer Responds by Discounting High-Quality, High-Demand Products
SEATTLE –(Business Wire)– Dec. 5, 2007 At the halfway point of this year’s holiday shopping season, results show that Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) customers have high expectations for gifts and are
seeking primarily high-quality, brand-name items. In response, Amazon.com is discounting many of the site’s most desired products, offering customers great value for their shopping dollar.

According to Amazon’s Most Wished For items (products that appear most frequently on customer Wish Lists), customers are seeking consumer electronics, toys, kitchenware, and watches from high-quality, well-known brands. Across all categories offered on Amazon.com, customers are using product ratings and customer reviews to determine the highest-quality items that fit their shopping budget.

“It is no coincidence that the Most Wished For items on Amazon.com also happen to be very high-quality items,” said Craig Berman, Amazon.com spokesperson. “Customers want products that are stylish,
durable and perform exceptionally well, and we are pleased to offer many of these popular and desirable products at greatly discounted prices as we head into our busiest time of the year.”

The Most Wished For list is available at:

Best GPS for the money????

August 8th, 2009

Im trying to purchase a GPS for my car (which i should have bought with the sat nav option – stupid me!!! – anyway). I have been on CNET’s review page and read all about them and such. What is the best GPS for the money. Im looking for something in the $200 – $350 range with Bluetooth and traffic. It would be mostly used for CITY driving. I am hoping for some actual testimonials, as to how reliable some GPS manufacturers are and if you would buy again. Like TomTom, Garmin, Navman, Magellan, Mio? Does a large screen prove helpful? Map support? Customer support? That kind of stuff. Please dont provide links to CNET or something like that, I know where to find specs about an item. I want to know which model and make are the most reliable.

Today’s GPS units all work fairly well and are pretty easy to use. The biggest difference used to be the maps, but even the maps are similar today. User configurabilty and map update costs are important considerations.

Are you interested in using your gps (for free) to detect traffic cameras? See how my $2000 Acura system compared to the $150 TomTom Version One (look for free poi file on page): http://www.a2dvoices.com/realitycheck/gps/TomTomGPS.html

Sat navs in the usa? are they any good?

August 7th, 2009

i have a garmin nuvi 350 which wasnt cheap and well reviewed and its basically crap!!, i was driving to meet friends somewhere i have never been and i live in the usa took an hour longer than it should of because took us on roads that didnt exist gave us instructions like one minute later than it should have.

ive used sat navs in england and they are great gave directions before i got to streets etc. was it the brand or just how sat navs are in the us?

Garmin is good, but you need to make sure the map is up to date and check your navigation settings.

I’m looking to buy a portable GPS navigator. What’s the best one for the money?

August 6th, 2009

I’ve looked at Consumer Reports and read some reviews online. I like to get everyone’s opinion on the good, the bad and the "ugly." So far the Garmin Nuvi 350 is looking pretty good. I’d like to stay around $300 or under.

I have a Garmin etrek and have had it for several years and love it. Go Garmin

Garmin is #1 in the USA and TomTom is #2, I would start by narrowing my list to those two. The Garmin maps by Navteq tend to be better for U.S. roads than the TeleAtlas maps that TomTom uses. I think the screen size is not as important as a good GPS with the latest maps, for Garmin 2008 maps, and TomTom is v710 maps. I have had a Garmin for about 3 years and it’s great. I also purchased a TomTom one 3rd edition for my daughter and it is a very nice GPS for only $150 so like I said either of these brands would be good.
